Pathos should never go to waste. It is behind some of humanity’s biggest pieces of work and achievement. So now that I have vowed to embrace it, what should I do with it?
If you can be of any help (and are good in philosophy), don’t hesitate :-)
i’m a self-styled philospher, but i’ll give it a bash
art always has an audience, and that audience is supposed to feel something. this is true even if the artist creates only for themselves as the audience. pathos is asking the audience to explore the questions being asked by the work. to feel something and to let those feelings guide us toward higher truths. when these questions are asked properly, a work of art will speak to large numbers of people. now since you are asking the audience to engage with your work, my suggestion would be that you make it about those things relevant and important to you specifically that also have mass appeal. this is pathos, appealing to the audience.
My problem is actually worse than this. I stopped creating a long time ago and have developed a tendency to bottle up absolutely EVERYTHING, which is obviously about to destroy me.
I just had an epiphany and realized that art was always my saving grace when dealing with the overwhelming angst and anxiety I had all my life. Creating was the ONLY sphere of my experience where I didn’t felt freakish or at odds. And now I have all these things inside me and instead of fleeing for them or repressing them like I have been doing for about 10 years, I would like to give it life which will help me find meaning.
To sum things up, I want to unlearn what I have been doing most of my life and go back to the free spirited child I was who would embrace her pain (^_^)
each and every one of those early experiences of creating have extremely vivid memories attached to them. smells, sounds, flavours, the temperature, the wind, a colour or even just a specific feeling. i would start there. find a creation you made. remember the smells, the sights, the sounds, the air on your skin. and let the feeling it evokes in you out through whatever medium you choose. =)
