Choice and Change

Being Angry At the System Doesn’t help

when we wake up and find that we have been lied to, and that harm has come of it, it is natural to be angry, it is good, because it’s a sign that we are still capable of change, that we have woken up and are willing to stand up for what needs to be done, but we cannot remain angry, or our anger will consume us, and we will become the problem instead of the solution. also, Anger, like Fear, releases a Stress hormone called Cortisol, the Long term effects of elevated cortisol levels are detrimental to us, both physically and mentally.

Cortisol operates with epinephrine (adrenaline) to create memories of short-term emotional events; this is the proposed mechanism for storage of flash bulb memories, and may originate as a means to remember what to avoid in the future. However, long-term exposure to cortisol results in damage to cells in the hippocampus. This damage results in impaired learning.

So remaining angry at the system, or pointing that anger at our ‘rulers’ (i refuse to call them leaders) or even at ourselves, is useful only for a moment, that moment in which we learn what makes us angry and we store it away as a vivid memory for reference when we need our anger as a reminder, thereafter, if we do not let the anger go and move on, we actually become less able to deal with the problems at hand.

when we embrace a scientific world-view, it becomes less about culpability and more about correcting the problem. Does it really matter who was more idiotic? or who caused the problem! shouldn’t we just fix the problem? since truly fixing the problem should result in it not happening again…

Anarchism: A Self-Spiritual Movement To Order

In the beginning. Three words that have the most profound impact on our planet. It is the offer of an answer. The answer, much disputed, is that a Divine being created all the universe and then chose man to enact HIS will.
And what a wonderful setup that has turned out to be. We, the actors of God’s will, must one day face judgement for these actions. The inherent unfairness is irrelevant, for how does one judge the Divine? Not easily, and certainly not too loudly, lest we wake the horrible heathen hunters.

Simple is not easy, and easy isn’t simple

if you want easy, what you’re asking for is that a profoundly complex series of events, beliefs and actions should occur, that make your particular experience uncomplicated.

obviously this would require that others be made to experience these complexities while you wallow in your ease.

the flip-side of course, is that simplicity is exactly that. simple. no hidden clauses or behind-the-scenes systems. of course, this can be really hard, since at no point is your ease a main priority

his books are about being idle as an act of defiance in a world so obsessed with hurrying, scurrying and action. How To Be Idle, and the Freedom Manifesto are good reads and I think you may enjoy them.

i only skimmed How To Be Idle, so i obviously got the wrong message from that *cringes with embarrassment*

I will definitely be getting my hands on these tomorrow :) thanks Taco :)

Have you ever read any Tom Hodgkinson?

not much, but some. His ideas on idle parenting and idle living are interesting but since the world is in an absolute shambles, i reckon the time for being idle is long past.

i’d like to read more though, so if you could recommend any of his other work, i’ll definitely look into it. :)

That sounds like it would make for an interesting relationship. I’d like to think I can balance a serious person out because it’s hard for me to be serious sometimes. :P

weirdest thing is, I’m actually a clown at heart, and it’s my inner comedian that is so cynical about the world. I’ve only recently started to become extremely serious, but I would argue that this is a direct result of the world’s problems becoming more serious.  Maybe I do need a non-serious person in my life, to help maintain perspective, but for that to happen, i’d have to actually go out and meet people…. why can’t i just date on tumblr?
